Bangsamoro timetable on track, Palace assures

MANILA - Malacanang believes the deadline for the creation of the Bangsamoro political entity is still on track amid the tight schedule for the passage of a supporting law at the legislative level.
“What we are looking at is the May 2016 schedule by which we are able to hold elections for the officials of the Bangsamoro political entity. The Bangsamoro Transitional Assembly needs enough time to undertake the plebiscite,” Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma, Jr. told radio dzRB.
Aquino ally and Majority Leader Neptali Gonzales II admitted that the House of Representatives will be unable to meet its self-imposed deadline in approving the draft basic law within the year.
He noted that a special committee is still conducting public hearings, which have been scheduled until the third week of December. After that, Congress will go on a one-month Christmas break.
“We recognize that Congress is doing its part by consulting the public on the matter,” Coloma said.
He believes the lawmakers also recognize there is an urgency in passing the basic law.
But Coloma said there is still enough time between now and the elections.
“We do not doubt we will be able to achieve peace, while at the same time we also recognize the constraints that our lawmakers are experiencing,” he said.
